JANANI EXPRESS PROMOTES INSTITUTIONAL DELIVERY

62 in Place, 50 would be in Place

With a view to promote institutional deliveries, National Rural Health Mission and Orissa Health & Family Welfare Department have collectively introduced a new scheme known as 'Janani Express' to provide nonstop free transportation facilities to pregnant women. The Scheme, projected to help reduce both infant and maternal death rates in the State was launched in the year 2008. Under the plan, all expectant mothers would get free transportation facility to health centres and hospitals for delivery. It would benefit the women to cope with emergencies, which arise during pre as well as post-delivery periods. In addition to pregnant women, sick babies are also allowed for the transportation service.

The scheme is particularly helpful in reducing IMR & MMR in the areas of the state where there is inadequate support in terms of transportation is available for carrying pregnant women to the PHC. Provision of 24 hours transport availability on call at community level in order to bring pregnant mothers & sick new born to Govt. Health facility at free of cost is the underlying principle that determines the scheme and its availability.

Equipped with necessary facilities, the vehicles used for transportation will be available at government hospitals, community health centres, primary health centres and other such suitable place in the respective blocks.

The driver is also having a cell phone, so that they can supply information about the health status of the patients to the hospital. The term 'Janani Express' is clearly mentioned on both front and rear of the vehicle, along with the contact no. Of the driver which can be contacted in case of emergency. Regions where mobile facility is not accessible, the land line telephone numbers of the hospital are also mentioned.

Currently there are 62 Janani Express which are operational in 21 districts of the state. The state proposes to 112 Janani Express in total in all thirty districts, where per block delivery load is more than 50 per month.
